Arthritis is a joint disorder featuring inflammation. A joint functions to move the body parts connected by its bones. Arthritis is frequently accompanied by joint pain, referred to as arthralgia. There are many forms of arthritis (over one hundred). The forms range from those related to wear and tear of cartilage (such as osteoarthritis) to those associated with inflammation resulting from an over-active immune system (such as rheumatoid arthritis). Together, the many forms of arthritis make up the most common chronic illness in the United States. The causes of arthritis depend on the form of arthritis. Causes include injury (leading to osteoarthritis), abnormal metabolism (such as gout), inheritance, infections, and for unclear reasons (such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus).
In Traditional Chinese Medicine arthritis is categorized as a blockage of Qi and Blood throughout energetic pathways in the body. It is considered to be a Bi Syndrome or Bone Bi Syndrome which is any impediment that affects the bones and joints. Whenever movement is impaired as in arthritis it is referred to as a Painful Obstruction Syndrome. Causative factors at include environmental invasion (Wind, Cold, Heat, Damp). Where the wei qi is insufficient and unable to protect the body from these external factors they can penetrate the body's defenses and lodge in the muscles, tendons, and joints creating obstruction, pain, and stiffness. Continuous stress will affect the flow of Qi and Blood by constraining the liver. |
